Glacier Point Road Reopens as the Dome Fire Holds

Open since 7 a.m. Saturday. Firefighters are still working along the road, and the trails inside the fire stay closed.

Glacier Point Road reopened at 7 a.m. Saturday, October 10, Yosemite National Park says. It had been closed for the Dome Fire since September, for smoke, visibility and firefighter access. The park asks drivers to go slowly and watch for firefighters working along the road.

The trails inside the fire are another matter. Every trail within the active fire footprint is still closed, including all of the south- and eastbound trails that start from Glacier Point Road, the Ostrander Lake Trail and everything south of it, and the Mono Meadow and Buena Vista trails. The Chilnualna Falls, Alder Creek, Four Mile and Panorama trails are open.

The fire held through Friday with no growth, at 6,829 acres and 61 percent contained with 935 people assigned. Crews finished critical line on the east side ahead of the weekend wind. That wind is today's test: south winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 32 mph this afternoon, with patrols ready for any spot fires outside the lines.

Winter is close behind. A low-pressure trough sits over the area Sunday through Tuesday, with highs in the 40s and 50s, lows from the upper 20s to the low 40s, and rain likely by late Sunday. Anyone driving to Glacier Point this week should expect cold, wind and possibly snow at elevation. Fire restrictions remain in effect below 8,000 feet.
