Glacier Point Road Reopens as the Dome Fire Holds

Open since 7 a.m. Saturday. Firefighters are still working along the road, and the trails inside the fire stay closed.

Glacier Point Road reopened at 7 a.m. Saturday, October 10, Yosemite National Park says. It had been closed for the Dome Fire since September, for smoke, visibility and firefighter access. The park asks drivers to go slowly and watch for firefighters working along the road.

The trails inside the fire are another matter. Every trail within the active fire footprint is still closed, including all of the south- and eastbound trails that start from Glacier Point Road, the Ostrander Lake Trail and everything south of it, and the Mono Meadow and Buena Vista trails. The Chilnualna Falls, Alder Creek, Four Mile and Panorama trails are open.

The fire held through Friday with no growth, at 6,829 acres and 61 percent contained with 935 people assigned. Crews finished critical line on the east side ahead of the weekend wind. That wind is today's test: south winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 32 mph this afternoon, with patrols ready for any spot fires outside the lines.

Winter is close behind. A low-pressure trough sits over the area Sunday through Tuesday, with highs in the 40s and 50s, lows from the upper 20s to the low 40s, and rain likely by late Sunday. Anyone driving to Glacier Point this week should expect cold, wind and possibly snow at elevation. Fire restrictions remain in effect below 8,000 feet.

Bouquet Fire Evacuations Lifted; Rowher Flat OHV Area Reopens, Drinkwater Stays Shut

Every order was lifted Friday evening. A post-fire assessment team is now on the burn.

All evacuation orders for the Bouquet Fire were lifted at 6 p.m. Friday, October 9, the Angeles National Forest says, and the Rowher Flat OHV area reopened at 5 p.m. the same day. The Drinkwater OHV area remains closed for public safety, along with forest roads 6N18 (Saugus del Sur) and 6N19 (Quarry Road).

Our Friday edition did not have this; the forest's update came after we checked.

The fire is holding at 1,048 acres and 83 percent contained. Graders are repairing dirt roads chewed up by engines and heavy equipment. A Burned Area Emergency Response team began work Friday, with engineers, hydrologists, archaeologists and a wildlife biologist assessing soil stability, watershed conditions and damage. Their findings will guide emergency stabilization work and decisions about when the rest of the area reopens.

Deception Pass, Skagit Bay and Port Susan Open for Winter Crabbing

Marine Areas 8-1 and 8-2 open October 10 after the crabs hardened. Seattle and Tacoma are still undecided.

Recreational crabbing opens Saturday, October 10, in Marine Area 8-1 (Deception Pass, Hope Island and Skagit Bay) and Marine Area 8-2 (Port Susan and Port Gardner), seven days a week through December 31, Washington Fish and Wildlife says. The two areas were held back from the October 1 opener until sampling, finished October 2, showed enough legal-size males had moved from softshell to hardshell.

Limits are the same across Puget Sound: five male Dungeness a day, plus six red rock and six Tanner crab. Record every Dungeness on the winter catch record card.

Marine Areas 10 (Seattle-Bremerton) and 11 (Tacoma-Vashon) are still waiting on final summer catch estimates before the department decides on any winter season. Hood Canal south of Ayock Point and South Puget Sound (Marine Area 13) stay closed for the rest of 2026.

Pile Burns Planned at Ross Lake and Lake Chelan Through November

North Cascades National Park Service Complex plans to burn brush piles left from fighting the Border 2 and Sisi fires in Ross Lake and Lake Chelan national recreation areas through October and November, when weather and staffing allow. Smoke may be visible from roads and around Stehekin and Ross Lake and can settle in low areas overnight. The park says burns will only go ahead when the risk of fire spreading beyond the piles is low.
