Summerland Trailhead Closed Through 2029 for Fryingpan Creek Bridge Work
The Wonderland Trail stays open, but hikers headed for Summerland need another way in.
Mount Rainier National Park has closed the Summerland Trailhead and its parking area on the White River side for the Fryingpan Creek Bridge replacement, and they will stay closed for the length of the project, which is expected to finish in late fall 2029. Work began September 28, the park said September 30.
No section of the Wonderland Trail is closed because of the work, but hikers going to Summerland on the Wonderland will have to start from another trailhead. The park also says areas east of the bridge will have a shorter season during construction.
This fall's work is mostly tree removal and site preparation, along with salvaging historic stone masonry from the old bridge abutments. Major construction starts in spring 2027. The new bridge will be built downstream of the existing one.
Drivers should expect work from about 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., one-lane traffic during and after work hours, and delays of up to 30 minutes.
