Dome Fire Reaches 30 Percent as Smoke Shifts to Tuolumne

4,809 acres. Wawona gets good air today; Tuolumne Meadows gets the smoke this afternoon.

The Dome Fire grew 311 acres since yesterday morning and is 30 percent contained, the Park Service says. It now covers about 4,809 acres.

Growth is still to the north and northeast, slowly, into the 2017 Empire Fire footprint, where rock and old burn are doing some of the work. Humidity is higher again today, but so is the wind, and the park warns that wind can carry embers further and start spot fires further out. Crews are building and widening line near Bridalveil Creek, Empire Meadows and Horse Ridge.

The smoke has moved. The park's outlook gives Wawona, El Portal, Hodgdon Meadow and Mariposa good air today. Southwest winds will push smoke into Tuolumne Meadows from late morning through the afternoon, where air is expected to be unhealthy for sensitive groups with heavier periods possible. Yosemite Valley is forecast moderate.

Glacier Point Road remains closed for visibility and firefighting operations; the Four Mile and Panorama trails to Glacier Point are open. The park is otherwise open and operating normally, with the Chilnualna Falls area trails still closed.
