Dome Fire Quiet on South and West as Crews Work East Flank
A slopover across the Ostrander Trail is being worked by helicopter. Estimated cost of the fire rises to $40 million.
The Dome Fire stayed inside its footprint on the south and west sides on Sunday, the incident's InciWeb update says, and crews there spent the day mopping up and improving lines. The work is now on the eastern flank, where pack mules are moving equipment to crews building line and helicopters are dropping water and shifting firefighters to the most active areas.
One of those areas is a slopover, fire that crossed the control line, at the Ostrander Trail. It happened Thursday and is being contained with helicopter support. Additional crews are still arriving.
The most recent park figure is Sunday morning's: 6,736 acres, 40 percent contained, 811 personnel. The federal incident report filed Saturday evening lists 6,670 acres and raises the estimated final cost of the fire to $40 million, up from $29 million on Thursday. The park had not posted a Monday update when this edition was prepared.
Smoke is easing as the fire slows. Yosemite Valley has had good to moderate air for two days and should through the week. Wawona and Yosemite West can expect moderate to unhealthy-for-sensitive-groups smoke in the mornings, clearing to good by late afternoon, and El Portal similar. Tuolumne Meadows should be mostly good. Winds turn westerly then northwest this afternoon at 5 to 10 mph, gusting to 15, and conditions stay warm and dry.
Closures are unchanged: Glacier Point Road; the Chilnualna Falls trail and the trails beyond it toward Buena Vista and Crescent Lakes; the Ostrander Lake Trail and everything south of it; and the Mono Meadow and Buena Vista trails. The Four Mile and Panorama trails to Glacier Point remain open.
