Cape Royal and Point Imperial Roads Close as North Rim Winds Down

The two scenic roads shut for repairs until November 3, the campground closes October 16, and there is no fuel in the park.

Grand Canyon's North Rim moves to modified fall operations on October 15. Cape Royal Road and Point Imperial Road will close from sunset October 15 to sunrise November 3 for repair and rehabilitation work with the Federal Highway Administration, the park said September 30.

Services end the same week. The North Rim Backcountry Information Center closes for the season at noon October 15, and the General Store at 4 p.m. that day. The North Rim Campground closes the morning of October 16. The gas station closed September 19, and there is no fuel in the park; the nearest food, fuel and lodging is at Jacob Lake, about 45 miles north, with more in Fredonia and Kanab.

The North Kaibab Trail is still closed end to end after the August 29 flash flood damaged the trail and bridges in Bright Angel Canyon. Other backcountry trips from the North Rim remain possible, with permits from the South Rim Backcountry Information Center or Recreation.gov.

The entrance gate on State Route 67 closes at sunset November 30 or after the first major snowstorm, whichever comes first. Until then, expect snow, ice and rain, and very limited emergency response. Arizona road conditions are at 1-888-411-7623.
