OC Parks is placing up to 9,000 cubic yards through October 30; parts of the beach may be closed while trucks work.
By Outdoor Unc
OC Parks is placing up to 9,000 cubic yards of sand at Capistrano Beach in Dana Point, with construction scheduled from October 12 through October 30. The sand comes from a quarry in San Juan Capistrano. Parts of the beach may be closed to the public while the work is under way.
The work comes after surf from Tropical Storm Rachel hit the south Orange County coast hard. The City of Dana Point said Monday that seven homes in the Capistrano Bay District had been red-tagged and 13 yellow-tagged, with two demolished and one more scheduled for demolition, local station ABC7 reported. Erosion has also taken out a parking lot and threatened the rail line along the beach.
The California Coastal Commission approved the sand as a stopgap until a longer-term Capistrano–Doheny shoreline project is built. It is not the first try: the county placed 20,000 cubic yards here in 2024, and that sand was largely gone by fall 2025.
For surfers and beachgoers, expect trucks, equipment and closed sections at Capistrano Beach Park, 35005 Beach Road, through the end of the month, and stay clear of eroded bluffs and damaged structures along Beach Road. Today's Weather Service beach hazards statement for Orange County also warns of minor tidal flooding and dangerous swimming conditions through 2 p.m.

The MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal window opens Friday at Supertubos. Defending champion Yago Dora arrives at No. 1.
By Outdoor Unc
The World Surf League's Championship Tour resumes Friday, October 16, at Supertubos in Peniche, Portugal, for the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal, event 10 of 12. The waiting period runs through October 25, with the first call set for 7:30 a.m. local time on Friday. It follows the Lexus Trestles Pro in San Clemente in September.
Reigning world champion Yago Dora heads into Peniche back at No. 1 on the men's rankings and as the event's defending winner, the league says. After Portugal, the tour goes to the Philippines Pro at Cloud 9 on Siargao from October 31 to November 10, and closes with the Pipe Masters on Oahu from December 8 to 20.
On the Challenger Series, Brisa Hennessy and Crosby Colapinto won the EDP Ericeira Pro in Portugal, results the league says could prove pivotal with one qualifying stop left before next year's tour is set.
The contest streams live on the World Surf League's website and app.

Beach hazards: elevated surf, rip currents, minor tidal floodingVentura, Los Angeles, Orange & San Diego Cos., CaliforniaThrough 2 p.m. Oct 15; surf 3–5 ft, sets to 6checked Oct 15

Surf of 3 to 5 feet with sets to 6 in San Diego and Orange counties, plus rip currents and minor tidal flooding from Ventura to the border, through 2 p.m. Thursday.
By Outdoor Unc
The National Weather Service has beach hazards statements in effect for the Southern California coast through 2 p.m. Thursday, October 15, as a long-period south swell lines up with some of the year's higher tides.
In San Diego and Orange counties, the San Diego office expects surf of 3 to 5 feet with sets to 6 feet and high tides of 6.5 to 7 feet late this morning, bringing minor coastal flooding, beach erosion and dangerous swimming conditions for inexperienced swimmers. Tides fall below 6.5 feet after today's high, but the south swell continues today.
From the Ventura County beaches through Malibu and the Los Angeles County beaches, the Los Angeles office warns of minor tidal overflow around the 6.4-foot morning high tide, elevated surf and dangerous rip currents that can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. Waves can wash people off beaches and rocks and capsize small boats near shore.
Expect water in low-lying beach parking lots and harbor areas around the high tide. The Weather Service's advice: stay near occupied lifeguard towers, stay off rock jetties, and do not drive through water of unknown depth or around barricades.

Denali Park Road vehicle rule, restricted section mile 15–90Denali National Park, AlaskaFinal rule Oct 15; up to 160 vehicles a day in seasonchecked Oct 15
Public land
A final rule replaces the seasonal cap of 10,512 permits and fixes the season's end date. Buses return to the west end in 2027.
By Outdoor Unc
The Interior Department and National Park Service have issued a final rule changing how many vehicles may use the restricted section of the Denali Park Road, from mile 15 to mile 90. Up to 160 vehicles a day may travel it during the visitor season, as long as the park's standards for resource conditions and visitor experience are met. That daily limit replaces the current cap of 10,512 vehicle permits a season.
The rule also fixes the season's end date. The season now always runs from the Saturday before Memorial Day through the second Thursday after Labor Day; language that could end it on September 15 in some years has been removed.
The agencies say the rule brings the regulations in line with the park's 2012 Vehicle Management Plan, which was developed with public input, and present it as part of an executive order on expanding access to national parks. Secretary Doug Burgum called it cutting red tape while protecting the landscape; Superintendent Brooke Merrell said it lets the park meet visitor demand while preserving its resources.
The road itself is about to reopen in full. The Pretty Rocks Bridge, which reconnects the east and west halves of the road after the 2021 landslide, was completed in September, and the park plans to restore public bus service to the west end in 2027. The release does not say how the daily limit will be divided among buses, permits and other users; check the park's road pages before planning a 2027 trip.

California Interagency Incident Management Team 4 is scheduled to hand command of the Dome Fire back to Yosemite National Park today. The fire is 95 percent contained at 6,788 acres with no perimeter change in several days, and staffing is down to 524 people in the latest federal report. Crews are patrolling, hauling out hose and equipment by mule and helicopter, and repairing hand lines to limit erosion. Warmer, drier weather with light winds holds through today. Glacier Point Road is open; every trail inside the fire footprint, including Ostrander, Mono Meadow and Buena Vista, stays closed, while Chilnualna Falls, Alder Creek, Four Mile and Panorama are open.
