Dome Fire Containment at 34 Percent, Target Date October 17

5,392 acres. Fire managers now have a date in view, and a warming trend arrives later this week.

The Dome Fire is 5,392 acres and 34 percent contained this morning, according to the incident's InciWeb update. The national situation report from the interagency fire center lists an estimated containment date of October 17.

The two federal sources disagree on the size this morning. The national report, compiled earlier, gives 5,259 acres and 31 percent with 796 personnel; the incident update gives 5,392 and 34. This paper uses the incident figure, which is the more recent. The national report also puts the cost of the fire so far at about $21.9 million.

Most of the active fire is in dense, closed-canopy red fir, where trees torching have thrown spot fires ahead of the line. To the north, managers expect growth to slow further as the fire runs into the 2017 Empire Fire burn. The bigger concern, the update says, is the west and southwest, where any fire moving downslope would meet heavier mixed conifer that ground crews would find harder to hold. Crews have run a hose lay about a mile long from a trailhead to the fire.

The cool spell ends soon. The 72-hour outlook calls for a warming and drying trend with incremental increases in fire behavior, though managers still expect minimal growth.

Glacier Point Road remains closed with no reopening date. The Four Mile and Panorama trails to Glacier Point are open.

Plaskett Fire Handed Back to Los Padres National Forest Today

Command of the Plaskett Fire on the Big Sur coast transfers back to Los Padres National Forest today, Tuesday, and the Timber Fire moves to Nevada Team 2, with the handover due to finish at 6 p.m. CAL FIRE says suppression repair is well along on all lines, crews are mopping up remaining heat along the Highway 1 corridor, and no fire spread is expected. A smaller team does not mean the land is open: the Monterey Ranger District closure that took effect Saturday stays in force through January 31.
