Dome Fire Passes 5,000 Acres; Cooler Weather Due Through Tuesday

5,215 acres and 30 percent contained after a 406-acre day.

The Dome Fire grew 406 acres since Sunday morning, more than on either of the two days before, and now covers 5,215 acres. Containment holds at 30 percent, and 808 people are assigned.

The growth was to the north and northeast, at what the park calls a moderated pace. Crews have laid hose along the handline on those two sides to hold it, and on the parts of the fire that are well contained they have started hauling hose and equipment back out.

The forecast helps. Cooler temperatures and higher humidity are expected through Tuesday, with light winds turning to the west and northwest. The park expects that to calm fire behavior and produce less smoke today.

For visitors the picture is the same as last week. Glacier Point Road is closed; the Four Mile and Panorama trails to Glacier Point are open; the Chilnualna Falls trail and the trails beyond it toward Buena Vista and Crescent Lakes are closed. There are no evacuation orders, and the park says no roads, buildings or utilities are under immediate threat.
