8- to 12-Foot Surf Due on the Outer Banks This Weekend

A high surf advisory runs from Saturday afternoon to Monday evening north of Cape Hatteras, and it could stretch into next week.

The National Weather Service office in Newport/Morehead City has issued a high surf advisory for the beaches north of Cape Hatteras, covering the Northern Outer Banks and Hatteras Island, from 2 p.m. Saturday, October 17, to 8 p.m. Monday, October 19.

Forecasters expect large breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet in the surf zone, peaking Sunday evening and night. They warn of dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion, and say advisory-level surf could last through much of next week.

The Weather Service's advice is that inexperienced swimmers stay out of the water; at this size it is surf for experienced surfers only. Beach erosion is expected, so check the North Carolina Department of Transportation's conditions for NC 12 before driving onto Hatteras Island, and watch for posted beach-access closures in Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
